Abstract：The challenge to urban design is to find sustainable urban forms for the 21st century. This paper looks beyond traditional sustainable forms-especially the pattern of small blocks and dense networks of streets-by examining the design strategies of Bernard Tschumi and Rem Koolhaas in their 1980’s competition entries for the Parc de La Villette in Paris. These projects, recognized as precursors to today’s emerging field of Landscape Urbanism, expand the scope of our possible urban design strategies and address issues of sustainability by specifying the necessity for precise urban structure, adaptability to programmatic change, and contributions to urban lives in the 21st Century.
